When the war started and schools closed, teachers and students moved to online teaching and learning from their homes. During that challenging period, the foundation invited its partners from the academic community to offer 450 teachers to take part in online workshops. During the last school year, 45 workshops, designed to assist in teaching applied mathematics to middle school students via remote learning, took place.
Now, the summer vacation has ended and secondary schools in Israel was struggling to fully reopen because of a dispute between the teachers’ union and the government and an imminent war in the north. As a result, the professional development of teachers has not yet begun. On account of this, and since during this school year a PISA assessment cycle will take place, we approached our partners once again and invited them to hold an additional round of online workshops. The purpose of these workshops is to ensure continuity of professional development until the education system is fully functional.
The Technion plans to hold 10 workshops for 150 mathematics teachers of high ability groups in ninth and tenth grades. Each three-hour workshop will be dedicated to the didactics of teaching applied mathematics. Individual online tutoring will also be offered to the participating teachers.
