he new wage agreements for teachers will gradually raise salaries by 50%, increase teachers’ time in school, introduce bonus payments for excellent teachers, and will lead to more individualized attention for each student. Over the next few years, working conditions for teachers and their career paths are likely to change, creating a strong need for new policy by the Ministry of Education. The new policy should address how to attract talent into teaching; teacher training and professional development; and better personnel management of the teaching core.
In collaboration with Koret Israel Development Funds, the Milken Israel Institute Center (MIIC) operates a fellows program, which places outstanding university graduates in government ministries. Fellows are trained to perform economic and market research, develop new ideas and form policy recommendations. MIIC seeks funding to sponsor two Education fellows who would work in the Education Ministry focusing on Teacher Policy and Quality. This placement will be a first step towards fostering a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Education to plan a new policy on teacher quality in Israel.
