Teaching Mathematics and the Sciences could be perceived in a number of different ways: complex, dry, routine; or alternatively ‘cool’, inspiring and innovative. As in other professions, the teaching craft combines both attention to detail and adhering to protocol, but it also requires creativity, ingenuity and self-expression. We believe that potential excellent candidates for teaching will consider changing careers, and later staying in teaching, only when they are appropriately exposed to both sides of the coin.
WIZE is a newly established nonprofit association, which could contribute to a down to earth perception of teaching in a unique and original manner. Founded by graduates of the elite 8200 military intelligence unit, over the past two years WIZE has been convening intellectual encounters in pubs and bars across the country, with volunteering lecturers who are experts in their fields. So far, two-hundred such events have been organized with thousands of participants focusing on various topics, such as high tech entrepreneurship, popular science, and poetry.
WIZE is now seeking funding to expand their work with a focus on science teaching and a goal to raise awareness among potential teaching candidates. The Teachers on the Bar project proposes to invite up to 50 outstanding educators to share their experiences with the audience. They will teach a science topic, while revealing typical mistakes and misconceptions among the learners, and explaining how teachers diagnose and react in such events. They will demonstrate a variety of teaching techniques, while adapting to diverse learning styles of students.
The lecture series will be accompanied by media exposure specifically targeting potential teaching candidates, in collaboration with Higia Zman Chinuch, the social media community. All lectures will be videotaped and uploaded to Youtube.
