Shatufim will convene a learning group for eight district coordinators of the Mathematics First initiative.
The Ministry of Education recently decided to appoint a special coordinator in each of its eight districts to lead and supervise the national effort to increase the number of students graduating high school with mathematics and science majors. The Ministry explains that through these coordinators it will be in a better position to implement the Mathematics First program as well as to leverage additional resources to advance this goal.In discussion between the Ministry of Education officials and the Trump Foundation staff, we pointed to the need to empower this new group of district coordinators; to nurture their professional capacity and to effectively connect them with various opportunities and programs which operate on the ground. Therefore, in collaboration with the leadership of Mathematics First, we approached Sheatufim, the non-profit organization which coordinates the civic coalition on Mathematics and Science Education (“5X2”), and sought their assistance.
Sheatufim is proposing to convene the eight district coordinators to form a joint learning group. The group will meet every three weeks over a period of two years to share case studies, to learn how to coach and provide feedback to teachers on their teaching of 5-unit mathematics, to forge partnerships with relevant programs of the “5X2” member organizations, and to collaborate with school principals in the Mathematics First program. In addition, the coordinators will receive individual mentoring, and will prepare and participate in a study tour to Europe to learn from similar efforts to raise the national level of achievement in mathematics.
The learning group will be led by Dr. Hamutal David, a renowned mathematics teacher at the Reali high school in Haifa, who serves as the clinical teacher educator for the Oranim Teacher Residency Program, and was a finalist of the Trump Master Teacher Award in 2012.
