One-hundred high schools are at the core of the recently established National Initiative to increase excellence in mathematics and science education. Titled: Mathematics First, the program aims to significantly increase the number of students graduating high school with science and mathematics matriculation over a period of five years. Within this framework, the Ministry of Education is concentrating its efforts on a selected group of 100 schools for which it provides additional teaching hours and support.Following discussions with the Mathematics First leadership, it has been suggested to convene the principals of the 100 schools chosen to participate in the program, and provide them with professional support. We have learned that the principals themselves feel that they could benefit from participating in a learning group, which would address a number of issues, including:
Therefore, it is proposed to develop a program around these themes to provide such support for the school principals. The program will include group meetings to present cases, to learn how to coach and evaluate teaching quality, and to get acquainted with relevant intervention programs. It will also incorporate individual coaching for the school principals, while facilitating the creation of useful work relations with the district on a regional level, and with the various partners of the National Initiative.
Since the Mathematics First program is already underway, we wish to catalyze this process. The grant will be reallocated to the operating organization when chosen.
