Three Additional Books in the Series of Publications on Quality Teaching
In 2013, at the initiative of Prof. Yoram Harpaz, the foundation approached the Branco Weiss Institute and the Yediyot Aharonot Publishing House, to curate, translate and publish a series of books on quality teaching. Four books have been translated to Hebrew thus far, representing a diversity of thought on the topic by scholars from around the world. The series currently comprises works by John Hattie, Daniel Willingham, Andrew Hargreaves, Michael Fullen and Howard Gardner. The books are sold at bookshops around the country at a cost price of 82 NIS. So far, 5,000 copies have been printed and over 3,500 sold.
Towards Israel’s 70th anniversary, we approached Harpaz and Branco Weiss once again. We proposed they solicit and compile short articles from thought leaders in Israel into a book, which will address the question: “What should Israel do in order to become one of the top 15 countries in the world in education?” Harpaz and the foundation will invite 50 decision makers, authors, teachers, principals and students to take part in the writing. Excerpts will be translated to English and be offered to an international publishing house.
In parallel, Branco Weiss will translate an additional two books to be incorporated in the series: “Future Wise: Educating Our Children for a Changing World” by David Perkins, and “Teaching for Understanding: What It Is and How to Do It” by Douglas Newton.
Branco Weiss is proposing a collaboration with a large publishing house to print the three books, either Yediyot Aharonot or Ha’Kibbutz Ha’Meuhad, and is currently in discussion with them. Drafts of the ‘Top 15’ book will be ready for discussion at the Advisory Council by November 2018 and ready for publishing the following year. In addition, Branco Weiss will organize a TEDx conference for 100 participants in which the contributors to the ‘Top 15’ book will present their insights.
